Joaquín Sorolla painted Strolling along the Seashore in 1909; this oil on canvas measures 205.0 by 200.0 centimeters and hangs in the Sorolla Museum in Madrid. The nearly square composition is very slightly taller than wide, with two women in long white dresses walking on golden-brown sand beneath strong sunlight as blue sea and white wave crests fill the upper part. Loose, broad brushstrokes shape the dresses, and the white fabric shows blue, violet and cream tones; Sorolla signed and dated the picture at the lower left.
What Strolling along the Seashore shows
Seen slightly from above, two women in long white dresses walk along a sandy beach. The woman on the left wears a wide straw hat with a purple ribbon and a long white veil blowing in the wind; she holds the veil with one hand and carries a closed or half-open white parasol low in the other. Her companion has dark hair in an updo, walks bareheaded, and holds a wide straw hat with ribbons at her side. A long translucent white scarf streams out behind her. Behind them, blue sea with white wave crests fills the upper part of the picture. The foreground is golden-brown sand, and the women cast blue-violet shadows. Strong sunlight falls across the scene, and the white dresses show blue, violet and cream tones. Loose, broad brushstrokes keep the surface lively; Sorolla signed and dated the picture at the lower left.
When and why it was painted
By 1909 Sorolla was in his mid-forties and already known for bright beach scenes along Spain's Mediterranean coast, especially near Valencia. He often painted outdoors, working quickly to catch changing sunlight and the movement of wind and water. Here he places two figures against the sea. The loose brushwork and close attention to white fabric under strong sun connect the painting to Impressionism. At the same time, the ordinary seaside walk and naturalistic figures keep it close to Sorolla's naturalism. He used oil on canvas, building the scene with broad strokes rather than fine detail.
Seeing it at home
A hand-painted copy of Strolling along the Seashore should respect the original's nearly square proportions and large scale, around 205 by 200 centimeters. Look for broad, loose brushstrokes and a palette built from white, cream, blue, violet, and golden-brown sand. The blue-violet shadows under the women matter as much as the bright sun on the dresses themselves.
